As a Safety Specialist, you will serve as a frontline safety leader, working directly with field crews in both roadway & off-road environments. You will identify and mitigate hazards, enforce safety standards, and support continuous improvement in Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) practices.

Position Summary
We are seeking a dedicated & proactive Construction Safety Specialist to join our Charleston Division. This role is ideal for a safety professional who thrives in field environments & is passionate about promoting a culture of safety across complex underground utility & infrastructure projects.
Our work includes the installation of primary, secondary, and communication conduit systems, precast structures, transformer & switchgear pads, as well as specialized operations such as jack & bore casing installations & roadway traffic control. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in ensuring all operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in full regulatory compliance.
Primary Responsibilities
· Conduct daily, weekly, and phase-specific safety inspections across active job sites
· Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, including excavation/trenching, fall protection, confined space entry, and heavy equipment operations
· Perform hazard analyses for critical construction activities, including:
-Underground conduit installation (primary, secondary, and communication systems)
-Jack & bore casing and spacer installations
-Placement of precast manholes, hand holes, and vaults
-Transformer and switchgear pad construction
-Traffic control and active roadway work zones
-Monitor trench safety, including soil classification, sloping, shoring, shielding, and safe access/egress
-Verify proper utility locating, marking, and protection prior to excavation
-Oversee traffic control setups in accordance with MUTCD standards
-Lead pre-task planning meetings & daily safety briefings
-Maintain accurate documentation of inspections, audits, permits, and incident reports.
-Conduct PPE compliance audits & ensure proper use of safety equipment
-Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and field leadership to proactively address safety concerns
-Stay current on OSHA regulations, NEC standards, and industry best practices
Qualifications & Requirements
·Must be at least 18 years of age
·High school diploma or GED required (technical or community college preferred)
· Strong knowledge of safety practices in underground utility, heavy civil, or infrastructure construction
· In-depth understanding of OSHA regulations, particularly excavation/trenching, confined spaces, fall protection, and work zone safety
· Familiarity with MUTCD standards for roadway traffic control
· Experience conducting risk assessments and implementing hazard mitigation strategies
· Proficiency with construction and safety management software (e.g., Procore, HCSS, SafetyCulture)
· Excellent documentation, communication, and organizational skills
· Ability to work independently across multiple job sites
· OSHA 30 certification (or higher) preferred
· Additional certifications in excavation safety, confined space entry, or traffic control are a plus
· Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel between project locations
Work Environment
· Active construction sites, including roadways, excavation zones, and heavy equipment operations
· Frequent walking on uneven terrain and potential trench entry (when safe and permitted)
· Exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain)
· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and wear always required PPE.
